Answers Pet Food has opted to use boxes not only for environmental reasons, recyclable, but also for health reasons. Plastic leaches toxic heavy metals and carcinogens (cancer causing toxins) into food. The leaching of toxins is increased when food is frozen in plastic. For details on the dangers of plastics go to http://www.ecologycenter.org/factsheets/plastichealtheffects.html.
The boxes will give the food a different appearance than food stored in plastic bag. Water wants to naturally migrate out of the frozen food. This water turns to crystals when product is stored in plastic. When frozen food is stored in boxes the migrating water is wicked (taken up) into the boxes. This wicking of the water creates a dry appearance on the surface of the food. This is actually the start of the freeze drying process, it is natural and does not change the food’s taste or nutrition. The color in meat is due to the two proteins myoglobin and hemoglobin found in the meat tissue. Answers Pet Food uses no color preservatives and the color of the myoglobin and hemoglobin can change due to exposure to air and light. When safely stored in the refrigerator or freezer, color changes are normal for fresh meat and poultry. Meat color is also influenced by the age of the animal, the species, sex, diet, and even the exercise it gets. Answers Pet Food only uses non-confinement (not caged) livestock that get exercise. The majority of meat in the grocery store is from confinement (caged) fed livestock, therefore Answers Pet Food meat and poultry may look different from meat sold at the grocery store. |
